LAPlayback Social Justice Statement

(After Asociación Ibérica de Teatro Playback and with thanks to the participants in Hane AL Rstum’s Social Justice in Playback Theatre Lab 2024)

Based on the fact that the United States came into being through a project of genocide and colonization that has left deep wounds extending all over the world, we seek to practice Playback Theatre not only as a space for listening to individual narratives, but as a tool for social justice and a vehicle for amplifying marginalized voices. In light of this aim, LA Playback Theatre Company defines as the structuring principle of its spaces (trainings, conferences, national and international gatherings) the need to contribute, to the best of our ability, to identifying and dismantling: ableism, ageism, anti-Blackness, anti-Semitism, colonialism, Islamophobia, anti-LGBTQIAP+ actions and laws, anti-fatness, anti-immigrant rhetoric and laws, patriarchy, classism, racism, sexism, white supremacy, xenophobia, Zionism, and any other forms of oppression and structural injustice. We call on Playbackers all over the world to share this commitment to building our consciousness around these issues in order to build an equitable, healthy, and happy world.
